English lightweight Marc Diakiese issued a call-out with all the hostility of play-date invitation on Monday, as he tried to land himself a fight with Sage Northcutt.
Doncaster’s Diakiese took to Twitter to gauge ‘Super’ Sage’s interest in a potential showdown during International Fight Week in July.
“Hello Mr. [Sage Northcutt], super exciting win at the weekend,” wrote Diakiese, referring to Northcutt’s unanimous decision victory over Thibault Gouti at UFC Austin on Sunday night. “I’d be super excited to share the octagon with you on International Fight Week.”
“Super warm regards, Mr. Diakiese.”
“How would you like to see a super exciting fight Mr.[Dana White], [Sean Shelby], [Mick Maynard]?”
.Hello Mr @sagenorthcutt, super exciting win at the weekend. I’d be super excited to share the Octagon with you, on international fight week?!
Super warm regards, Mr. Diakiese.

Painfully polite, perpetually smiling, and displaying all the menace of a Mickey Mouse Club member outside the octagon, Northcutt is easy to poke fun at and he doesn’t always get a lot of respect from his fellow lightweights, who feel he was overhyped early in his UFC career. The Texan deserves more respect, however, as he has rebounded admirably from a couple of tough, high-profile setbacks during his stint in the big leagues and his win over Gouti at the weekend was his fifth in seven fights with the UFC – not bad for a 21-year-old kid.
The explosive Diakiese came bounding into the UFC an undefeated fighter with an impressive highlight-reel already compiled and after three fights in the promotion he looked set for stardom, but ‘Bonecrusher’ has since suffered two consecutive defeats and is in dire need of a solid rehabilitative victory. A win over Northcutt would do the trick.
International Fight Week is set to feature two big cards, The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale on July 6th and UFC 226, which is headlined by a super-fight between heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and light-heavyweight kingpin Daniel Cormier, the following evening. An interesting match-up between two lightweights who have benefitted from significant hype during their UFC runs but also fallen victim to it, Northcutt vs. Diakiese would be a nice addition to either card, as a prelim at UFC 226 or perhaps as a main card attraction at the TUF Finale.
