MMA Fighter In Serious Condition After TKO Loss To SBG Prospect In Dublin

On Sunday, we published an article containing a video of Conor McGregor celebrating the 2nd professional victory of his friend and teammate Charlie Ward at Total Extreme Fighting(TEF) 1, which took place the previous evening at The National Stadium in Dublin.

Ward moved to 2-1 with a 3rd round TKO victory over Portugal’s Joao Carvalho, much to the delight of his SBG brethren at cageside.

Unfortunately, it has since emerged that Carvalho felt unwell in the aftermath of the stoppage and is now in a serious condition.

TEF have released the following statement regarding the Team Nobrega welterweight;

“Our thoughts are with Joao Carvalho, his family and Team Nobrega. Joao’s welfare is our primary focus at this moment in time but we will update you on Joao’s condition as it becomes clearer although he is in a very serious condition having felt unwell after the fight. If you could respect Joao Carvalho and Team Nobrega’s privacy at this time, it would be greatly appreciated”.

“In the run up to the event we also consulted with medical practitioners, neurosurgeons and combat sport experts. We had also three doctors and paramedic staff present on the night.”

“Their presence and adhering to best practices ensured that the seriousness of Joao’s condition was recognized and swift action taken and we are thankful for their help. Serious injuries like this are rare worldwide in MMA but it is important that every possible precaution is taken to ensure every competitor’s welfare.”

Like Ward, Carvalho was taking part in his 3rd professional contest and came into the bout with a 1-1 record. His previous 2 contests had both taken place in his homeland.
