Five days ago, Conor McGregor posted a video to Instagram advertising his high-performance training program, F.A.S.T. In a message written alongside the advertisement, McGregor promised that the announcement of his next fight was just days away.
We are still waiting.
However, today, ‘The Notorious’ Irishman did use Instagram to confirm the date and venue for teammate Charlie Ward’s next fight.
Ward, who was involved in that tragic fight with Joao Carvalho in April of last year, made his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 99 in Belfast last November. Unfortunately for the County Laois native, he was matched with explosive knockout-artist Abdul Razak Alhassan. The Ghanaian welterweight came into the fight off the back of six straight wins. Each of those wins had come via first-round stoppage and he had never been extended beyond the 86-second mark. Ward was unable to take him into uncharted territory, as ‘Judo Thunder’ wrecked the SBG Ireland representative inside a minute.
Ward’s chance at “redemption”, as McGregor put it, will come on July 16th at UFC Fight Night 113 at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow. McGregor did not reveal the identity of Ward’s opponent, however.
I am happy to announce that Charlie Ward will have his redemption fight on the UFC Scotland card. It is hard work and focus from here on in for him. He must not only win here. He must dominate. I am confident he will make things right and show his true fighting capabilities. Thank you @danawhite and the @UFC!
Ward lost his professional debut, stopped in the second by John Phillips, who is now his teammate and is also a member of the UFC roster. He reeled off three wins thereafter, before signing with the UFC.
