SBG Ireland featherweight Artem Lobov will return to action on April 7th, as he has been booked to take on Alex Caceres, or ‘Bruce Leeroy’ as he is also known, at UFC 223 in Brooklyn, New York.
The Mac Life reported last month that the match-up was in the works for an undetermined date, though the site suggested that March 17th and UFC London made the most sense at that point. On Tuesday, however, MMA Fighting broke the news that the bout has been added to the massive card at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
In his most recent outing, last October, Lobov dropped a unanimous decision to Team Alpha Male stalwart Andre Fili at UFC Gdansk. That was Lobov’s second straight decision defeat, as he had also come up short against the highly-ranked Cub Swanson in the five-round main event of UFC Nashville six months earlier.
This is a crucial outing for the game Lobov, as it’s not often that a fighter sticks around in the UFC following a third consecutive loss.
Caceres is one of those rare fighters. He lost three times in a row between July of 2014 and June of 2015 but lived to tell the tale. He once again looks to be skating on thin ice, however. The one-time bantamweight has lost three of his last four and six of his last nine. In his most recent outing, last November, Caceres dropped a split decision to promotional debutant Guan Wang at UFC Shanghai.
Lobov is a perfect addition to this card. A Russian who also represents his adopted homeland of Ireland, he will be very popular in Brooklyn, a borough with large Russian and Irish populations.
