Chad Mendes has not held back when speaking about Conor McGregor, expressing his desire to “punch (him) in the face”.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Mendes spoke about his upcoming bout with Jose Aldo and a potential match-up for the winner with Conor McGregor. The Notorious is riding the crest of a wave at present following his first-round TKO of Dustin Poirier at UFC 178 and Mendes spoke his mind when asked about the SBG fighter.
“Honestly, the guy talks a lot of sh*t, but I think he’s great for the sport. It’s an eye-opener for a lot of people to bring that much recognition to the featherweight division and the sport of the UFC.
“I think it’s great, but don’t get me wrong, I would love to punch this dude right in the face.”
Mendes continued to berate McGregor, with a number of back-handed compliments.
“He’s a big talker. He’s got the skill set to back it up, but I don’t think he’s on my level yet. I think Dennis Bermudez..Clay Guida..Nik Lentz..All three of those guys would most likely beat him.”
The belief is that the winner of the Mendes-Aldo II fight will face McGregor, and the Dubliner will be in attendance when the two go to war in just over two weeks.
“If I go out and beat Aldo, I would rather fight a bigger name like Conor. Not necessarily a bigger name, but a guy with a bigger draw like that. That’s going to be a ton more money.”
Mendes-Aldo II takes places on October 25th at UFC 179 in Rio de Janeiro.
