Ireland’s favourite adopted MMA son, Gunnar Nelson, is in confident mood ahead of his headline UFC clash with Rick Story in Stockholm on Saturday.
Nelson faces a tough opponent in Story, a veteran of the MMA game that has recorded wins over some big fish, most notably current champion Johny Hendricks.
‘Gunni’ is aware of the challenge he faces, but the rising welterweight star is riding the crest of a thirteen-fight win streak and is not willing to let this opportunity slip through his fingers. On headlining the event, Nelson said the following:
“I’ve been given a huge opportunity, a huge thing after only two years in the UFC. I’m very happy with camp. I had four weeks with John Kavanagh before he left with Conor [McGregor] for the US.”
Saturday’s fight with Story will be Nelson’s first taste of five rounds, but the Icelandic powerhouse isn’t phased by the challenge that awaits.
“For me, a five round fight is no different. I get stronger as the fight goes on, I get a better sense of him and feel his energy better.”
Nelson made his UFC debut two years ago on Tuesday and tweeted the following.
