Urijah Faber is set to return to the Octagon after two and a half years away as he puts an end to his retirement to face Ricky Simon at UFC on ESPN+ in July.
The UFC hall of famer hasn’t fought since December 2016 when he defeated Brad Pickett by unanimous decision but comes out of retirement at 40 years of age to face up-and-coming bantamweight Ricky Simon in front of his hometown fans in Sacramento California.
According to MMA Junkie and Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer, the bout has been verbally agreed to and is expected to be announced soon for the July 13th card.
Faber is 1-2 in his last three bouts in the UFC including a defeat to Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight title, a loss which moved his record to 0-4 in title fights.
Since his retirement two and a half years ago Faber has remained close to the sport as a coach at his gym Team Alpha MMA while also competing in grappling, recently losing to 17-year-old Nicky Ryan at Polaris 10.
Faber’s opponent Simon represents a difficult task on his return to the octagon with the 26-year-old currently on an eight-fight win streak, coming out victorious in all three of his bouts in the UFC.
The latest UFC on ESPN+ 13 card now includes:
