Alistair Overeem continued his heavyweight resurgence last night as he defeated Aleksei Olenik in the main event of UFC Fight Night 149 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Oleinik who was a late replacement for Alexander Volkov, was going into this fight off the back of two first-round submission wins over Junior Albini and Mark Hunt, but could not impose his style on Overeem as he fell to defeat.
The Russian heavyweight did appear to catch Overeem with some big shots early in the fight as he put the Dutch fighter on the defensive however it wasn’t long before The Reem took control.
With a minute to go in the first round, Overeem hit Oleinik with some huge knees in the clinch dropping the Russian as the end looked near.
From there Overeem was able to mount his opponent and land some heavy shots from top position as the referee called a stop to it with just 15 seconds remaining in the round.

The victory will likely propel Overeem up the ranks of an already stacked heavyweight division as the 38-year old extends his winning streak to two in a row in Russia.
Speaking after the victory, Overeem outlined that a fight against Volkov, the man he was originally supposed to square off with, makes the most sense for him as he looks to make it three in a row.
“Yes, I’m still looking for that fight,” Overeem said. “I was very prepared to fight Alexander Volkov, I was looking forward to that fight. That fight did not happen tonight, but hopefully the next UFC fight will be Alexander Volkov.”
