UFC President Dana White has outlined that Conor McGregor has told him he wants to fight Jorge Masvidal following his comeback fight with Donald Cerrone in January.
McGregor has not fought in the UFC since his defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov in their lightweight title fight last October but will return in January at UFC 246 in Las Vegas to fight veteran Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.
The bout will be at welterweight, just the third time McGregor has fought at 170 in the UFC after the two fights with Nate Diaz, with some feeling that’s due to it being Masvidal’s weight class.
McGregor reportedly wants to fight three times in 2020, including his upcoming bout with Cerrone and White told 101.6-FM in Washington, D.C. in quotes reported by MMA Junkie, that Masvidal is in his crosshairs.
“Conor has told me he definitely wants a fight with Masvidal,” White said. “So we’ll see what happens.”
Masvidal and McGregor would no doubt be an incredibly exciting fight for fans of the UFC and coming off a high-profile three fight win streak in the division Gamebred told Yahoo Sports that it could well be the former two-weight world champion next.
“They’re fighting for the spot to fight me. I’m the ticket at 170 pounds. I’m going to go and get the biggest, best and toughest fights.
“So it’s looking like we might fight Nick Diaz next, it’s looking like it might be Conor McGregor, obviously those fights come first because of the paycheck and everything it brings while these guys are settling the dust between the hugging championships.”
McGregor though, will be well aware that he must first negotiate the difficult challenge posed by Cerrone in January, with Cowboy one of the most experienced fighters in the whole of the UFC.
If he can make an impression and pick up his first win in over three years, then a clash with Masvidal could certainly be on the cards.
