Owen Roddy’s name is renowned throughout the world of combat sports. The SBG Charlestown is the striking coach for one of the world’s most feared strikers, Conor McGregor.
What many don’t know about Coach Roddy though, is that he is also a Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Black-Belt under the tutelage of John Kavanagh.
Roddy himself fought professionally, but it was his coaching ability that gave him a platform on a global stage.
Despite not having fought professionally since 2012, Roddy has decided to throw himself back into the world of competitive martial arts when he competes in a BJJ tournament in Portlaoise.
The SBG Charlestown head coach will make his competitive return against Poland’s Łukasz Latka at the Grapple Kings 3 – Jiu-Jitsu Tournament in February 2019.
Łukasz is a multiple time BJJ medallist and also the head coach at Berserkers team Carragh and is a BJJ black belt under Berserkers head coach Piotr Baginski.
For those who may not be familiar with Roddy’s grappling prowess, this video of him acrobatically grappling at a martial arts event in Dublin last year gave us an insight into how talented the coach is.
The tournament will take place in Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise and you can buy tickets here.
