Conor McGregor has mocked Khabib Nurmagomedov’s vow for his upcoming unification fight.
Nurmagomedov is set to meet management stablemate Justin Gaethje in a UFC lightweight unification bout later this year and the undefeated Russian has promised to put Gaethje’s famed toughness to the test.
Responding to an Instagram post from UFC commentator Joe Rogan, Nurmagomedov commented: “Justin is a very nice guy and good opponent for me, but when octagon close he have to be ready not only boxing match, I’m not Dustin or Tony.
“I will take him to the deepest ocean and drown him.”
McGregor, who submitted to a neck crank from Nurmagomedov in October 2018, saw the funny side of his fierce rival’s promise as he commented with a couple of laughing emojis before he suggested what might be going through Nurmagomedov’s head.
McGregor wrote: “In other words – ‘I’m going to be running around the outside of the cage, shitting my pants. And within the first ten seconds of the fight I’m diving at his legs for a good whiff of his jockstrap’.”
McGregor announced his retirement from mixed martial arts earlier this year but continues to hint at a possible return to combat sports.
Some have been led to believe that ‘The Notorious’ is hinting at a return to the boxing ring for a clash with the legendary Manny Pacquiao but UFC President Dana White dismissed those suggestions.
White also promised that McGregor, who remains his most reliable cash cow, would not compete at all this year despite his initial plans for a 2020 season.
“This year, he is retired,” White told Barstool Sports.
“He doesn’t have a fight this year, and he won’t have a fight this year. Conor McGregor will not fight in 2020. … I guarantee he will not fight in 2020.”
