Schaub joined Rogan on his fight companion to UFC Fight Night 83: Cowboy vs. Cowboy, and shared his manic belief in Conor McGregor.
The ex-UFC heavyweight is a big fan of The Notorious, who faces Rafael Dos Anjos in less than two weeks at UFC 196. UFC commentator Joe Rogan is also ‘in love‘ with the Irishman, but sees lightweight champion Dos Anjos as a more than worthy challenge, and the “best lightweight champion we have ever known”.
Schaub concurs with Rogan on the task McGregor faces on March 5, but he believes that the prospective fight 15lbs. further up at UFC 200 with the welterweight champion would represent an easy night for the Dubliner.
“I’m gonna say something crazy, Joe. Are you ready for this?”, he warned.
Joe wasn’t ready, and neither were we.
“I think the toughest match-up possible for McGregor in the UFC is Dos Anjos. I think the easier fight for him is Robbie Lawler. Robbie’s not gonna touch him. Not a chance. I think he f**ks Robbie up, and I love Robbie! Style wise he f**ks Robbie up.”
Having campaigned at featherweight for the past three years (25lbs. below the division that Lawler reigns over), many feel that McGregor would be outsized and consequently outgunned if he were to move to 170lbs, as has been rumoured.
But to hear an experienced UFC fighter give McGregor such an edge over a bigger man shows just how highly regarded he has become among some of his peers. Rogan did sound a note of caution regarding another welterweight contender, though.
“Stay the f**k away from Wonderboy [Stephen Thompson]. That dude’s got the glow right now – the Bruce Leeroy glow. What he did against Johny Hendricks should be against the law!”
