UFC 228 Suffers Injury Blow As Yair Rodriguez Is Out

UFC 228 early next month is still a stacked pay-per-view, but one exciting component won’t be present.

Yair Rodriguez is a hugely exciting fighter to watch, with his flashy kicking game a highlight of any card he competes on.

Per MMA Brasil however, an injury has forced him off the September 8 showcase in Dallas, Texas.

The Mexican was due to face Zabit Magomedsharipov, the 15-1 Russian who has won all three of his UFC bouts in decisive fashion. At 15th in the featherweight rankings, Zabit has been fancied for a title shot in 2019. His reaction to the news on Instagram was understandable.

The UFC are said to be looking for a replacement, though time is against them with just over two weeks to go until the event. No possible replacements have been named, but the likes of Cub Swanson ahead of him in the rankings could be an option, though Enrique Barzola or a similar fighter lower down the pecking order is more realistic at this juncture.

The event is headlined by Tyron Woodley and Darren Till, with Nicco Montaño defending her flyweight belt against Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event.
