With the announcement of the rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz at UFC 202, we relive the finest quotes from their incredible rivalry thus far.

The duo met in March of this year at UFC 196, with the latter (as a late replacement on ten days notice, no less) coming out on top after submitting the UFC featherweight champion in the second round. Though scheduled to renew their war at UFC 200, the fight was pulled after McGregor’s well publicised ‘retirement’.

Saturday night at UFC 199 finally saw the confirmation of the welterweight rematch.

Though both fighters have only been on each other’s radars for the best part of seven months, there’s already a treasure trove of smack talk between them, some of which has embedded itself in the MMA lexicon. Here, we take a look at the top ten of those quotes.

10) “Conor McGregor, you’re taking everything I worked for, motherfucker!”

9) “I do respect Nate, don’t get me wrong. There’s a lot of pussies in this business, and he is not one of them.”

Before relations between both men deteriorated, the undoubted mutual respect between them shone through in the initial UFC 196 press conference.

While confident that he would obliterate the American, McGregor could appreciate his willingness to step up after Rafael Dos Anjos’ withdrawal.

“I respect Nate. Don’t get me wrong, I do respect Nate.

In reality many people pretended like they wanted to fight until the fight actually presented itself. I just thought it’s another day. It’s always happening. They always pull, they always run. They make it out like they want it but really they don’t want it.” – Conor McGregor

8) “Conor got his ass beat.”

When The ‘Notorious’ refused to fulfil promotional duties for UFC 200, he was pulled from the card. Nate Diaz showed up to the ill-fated press conference, and turned the assorted media and fans into a sitcom audience.

7) “Oh, you’re a wrestler now?”

6) “Give us a quick count to ten, both of you.”, “Nate can only count to five!”

This bizarre CNBC interview saw McGregor at his most witty, yet condescending, garnering Nate some sympathy in the process.

5) “He makes gang signs with his right hand and animal balloons with his left hand!”

McGregor poked fun at Nate’s ‘tough guy’ image, alluding to his community service with a killer line.

“I like Nick’s little bro. How could you not like him? He’s like a little gangster from the hood. But at the same time he coaches kids’ ju-jitsu on a Sunday morning and goes on bike rides with the elderly. He makes gun signs with the right hand and animal balloons with the left hand. You’re a credit to the community.”

4) “I’m not on steroids. … I’m just an animal.”

A gravely serious accusation of steroid use developed into a wildly entertaining back-and-forth between two of the most charismatic fighters in the UFC.

“Steroids? What are you talking about steroids? Don’t be putting my name with steroids. I’m major against that, don’t put my name in the name of steroids.

“I’m not the one on steroids, what the fuck are you talking about? Your two teammates were on steroids. Jake [Shields] and Gil[bert Melendez]. I’m not on steroids. I’m just an animal.”

-….”You’re on steroids.”

3) “You’re playing touch-butt with that dork in the park with the pony tail!”

The second press conference just three days prior to the fight saw Diaz flatten the burgeoning reputation of movement coach Ido Portal in one fell swoop.

2) “Mark my fucking words I am going to toy with him in the rematch. Believe that.”

Though the usually cocksure McGregor went relatively silent in the wake of his crushing defeat to Nate, he returned to tarash-talking prominence with a bang last month, promising to “school Diaz to the bell” in a defiant rant.

McGregor Mendes

I am coming in light and lean for my rematch and I will school this boy to the bell. Last time I was eating four breakfasts and a dessert on the day of weigh in. You will see. You will all see.

On the floor he was swept and controlled.
When the tank goes, no amount of skill can save you.
You will see.

He has made more excuses for the first 8 minutes of our fight than I have made for the last 2 minutes of our fight. He came in with no shit to do that last one. I’d already done press conferences, interviews and shot the ads before RDA pulled out.

Mark my fucking words I am going to toy with him in the rematch.
Believe that.

1)  “I’m not surprised, motherfuckers!”

After submitting Conor McGregor in what was the second biggest PPV in UFC history, Nate Diaz shocked the world, then made it laugh in a post-fight interview which has already secured it’s place in MMA folklore.
