Demetrious Johnson believes that Conor McGregor can get the job done at UFC 197, but that it depends on how Rafael Dos Anjos approaches the contest.
Speaking to FightAffect, Johnson, current flyweight champion and number two ranked in the UFC’s ‘P4P’ list behind only Jon Jones, gave his measured take on how the blockbuster match-up between Conor McGregor and Rafael Dos Anjos may go.
“It’s gonna be a tough fight for both those guys, we’re gonna have to see how the fight goes”, Mighty Mouse said.
“Conor McGregor is not a small dude at 155.”
“If RDA over-extends and gets too wild with his shots, Conor will pick his shots. It is no secret that Conor McGregor has heavy hands. He knows the right shots, he knows the soft spot of the face and, if he lands there, it will be an easy night and an easy cheque for him to go back home and cash it.”
Johnson did sound a note of caution, however, stating that the Brazilian could well dictate the direction of the fight depending on if he gets too aggressive or grinds it out much like he did in his demolition of former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis.
“If RDA can get near and push Conor, wrestle Conor, break him mentally which obviously if that happens I can see the fight going to RDA”, he warned.
“Then again, Conor might get pushed and rise to the occasion and show off some of that sick s**t he can do “.
One thing for sure is that McGregor is being taken far more seriously as a fighter than he was in the lead-up to his bouts against Chad Mendes, and to a lesser extent, the Aldo confrontation.
