Khabib Teases Huge Announcement As Top Journalist Suggests McGregor Fight Is On The Horizon

The UFC’s 2018 is set to begin with a bang at UFC 220, but the Boston event could herald the beginning of the year’s biggest story.

Two title fights featuring the sport’s heaviest hitters headline UFC 220 on January 20, as Stipe Miocic attempts to stop the seemingly unstoppable Francis Ngannou, while Daniel Cormier rebounds from his loss to Jon Jones to take on the dangerous Volkan Oezdemir.

Someone else who will be in attendance (though not as a combatant) is Khabib Nurmagomedov.

‘The Eagle’ made a winning return at UFC 219 after 13 months out of action, dominating top contender Edson Barboza. As a perennial lightweight contender in his own right, Khabib had an opportunity at the interim 155lb. championship at UFC 209 in March of last year against Tony Ferguson, but a botched weight cut for the Dagestani saw the bout called off.

Ferguson subsequently won the interim belt at UFC 216 at the expense of Kevin Lee, making him the legitimate challenger to Conor McGregor’s lineal championship.

However, Nurmagomedov might play a bigger role in title proceedings than expected.

Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole tweeted earlier today that the 25-0 lightweight would be present at UFC 220 at the behest of the promotion itself. While he couldn’t confirm the reason for Khabib’s appearance, Iole, who frequently has close access to UFC president Dana White and was the one to break the historic news of the Mayweather/McGregor bout, was very much excited at the prospect and what it could mean for the lightweight division in 2018.

It was pointed out to him that Khabib was likely only going to corner his compatriot and teammate Islam Makhachev, but Iole remained on tenterhooks.

Now Nurmagomedov himself has stated just hours later that he has some “big news” incoming. While such an announcement in and of itself often leads to a new sponsorship deal with a clothing or supplement brand, this coupled with Iole’s confirmation that Khabib has been sent to Boston on a business trip could see the beginning of the resolution of the UFC’s lightweight division.

Whether another interim title bout between Tony and Khabib is on the horizon, or the return of McGregor to the octagon for the first time since 2016 is soon approaching, could well be made clear at UFC 220 in just over a week.
