Chael Sonnen Explains How A Conor McGregor/Floyd Mayweather Showdown ‘Could Happen’

Conor McGregor

Speaking on his ‘Beyond the Fight’ series, the ever interesting Chael Sonnen explored the possibility of the UFC’s Conor McGregor fighting boxing’s Floyd Mayweather.

“I was in public office and I left public office the only way a person should. In handcuffs.” – Chael Sonnen

Having ran for Congress, and being one of the best talkers in combat sports, Chael Sonnen knows a thing or two about politics. While skeptical that the unlikely fight will occur, Floyd’s conduct has convinced Sonnen that the hype surrounding it is nowhere near unjustified.

“In fighting, as in politics, you never punch down.”, Chael stated.

“If you’re President of the United States, you do not respond to a Governor. Now the Governor might punch forward and talk about the President, but you do not punch down.

So if you’re Conor McGregor, you might go after Floyd Mayweather. [Floyd is] the biggest draw in combat sports – King of the world. Now if Conor was talking about him, you could dismiss the whole thing…but Floyd’s the one talking about Conor. He talked about him first. Floyd’s not gonna punch backwards.”

“It doesn’t mean that the fight’s gonna happen, but it does mean that the conversation has taken place behind closed doors.”

It’s for that reason that Sonnen believes that the nigh-on impossible mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor has something to it, despite the sheer volley of obstacles in it’s way.

“Everyone’s dismissing it, but not so fast! This thing’s got legs. The fight’s not totally out of the question – it could happen. You never punch backwards – and Floyd knows that better than anybody.”
