Ben Askren’s Epic UFC Debut In January Is Official

Ben Askren finally has a sanctioned UFC bout to look forward to, and in fairness to the unbeaten grappler, it’s a baptism of fire.

With Fedor Emelianenko’s defeats in Strikeforce earlier this decade, Askren has long been touted as the best fighter available outside the UFC.

But a grapple-heavy style proved anaemic to UFC president Dana White, and it looked as though the opportunity to compete for the sport’s biggest promotion had passed when the welterweight retired in 2017.

However, the mammoth trade deal that saw him finally join the UFC from ONE Championship has opened up a world of opportunity for the 34-year-old, who wasted no time in calling out the good and great of the 170lb. shark tank.

To his credit, he’s willing to be matched against a former champion of that very division.

Reports claimed it weeks ago, and it has finally been made official that Askren will fight Robbie Lawler at UFC 233 on January 26.

‘Ruthless’ has lost two of his last three bouts as his 41 fight career understandably winds down, but this striker vs. grappler match-up is made interesting by the fact that Lawler is an All-State wrestler in his own right.

If he becomes the one to tame Askren’s peerless credentials in that department, it could be a long night for the UFC debutant.
