Updated: Amanda Nunes Hospitalised, UFC 213 Main Event Now Cancelled

Amanda Nunes Valentina Shevchenko

Worrying news has emerged just hours before UFC 213 gets underway, concerning the health of women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.

The event has already lost blockbuster match-ups such as Robbie Lawler vs Donald Cerrone and TJ Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt, and will now likely lose its main event in Amanda Nunes vs Valentina Shevchenko.

Just minutes ago, Ariel Helwani confirmed that 135lb. champion Amanda Nunes is in hospital having felt ill during fight week.

Such a move in close proximity to the scheduled fight time leaves little hope of the bantamweight championship match going ahead. As acknowledged by Campus Sports’ Josh Sanchez, the NSAC would be highly unlikely to allow the bout to take place as a result.

The Brazilian appeared healthy at yesterday’s weigh-ins, and made weight without any visible issue.

Per Helwani, if the fight is cancelled, the interim middleweight title fight between Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero would become UFC 213’s main event.

UPDATE: The UFC have confirmed the fight’s cancellation.
