ESPN has reported that the middleweight title showdown between champion Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum is set for UFC 234 in Australia next year.
The pair have been competing against each other on the most recent edition of The Ultimate Fighter but with that series’ conclusion, the attention will turn to the 185lb championship bout that will end the show’s run.
ESPN reported first that the long-awaited middleweight title clash will take place in Whittaker’s home country of Australia next year, with UFC 234 in Melbourne on February 10 the date that they have in mind.
Gastelum himself confirmed the news with a post to his official Instagram account.
Gastelum has managed to find a new home for himself in the middleweight division – with standout wins coming against Ronaldo Souza and Michael Bisping.
For Whittaker, his pair of unforgettable showdowns with the former-Olympian Yoel Romero saw him establish himself on the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings.
These two are amongst the finest young fighters on the roster today and while only one man can come out on top next February, it’s easy to see both hanging around the upper echelons of the division for the next few years.
