The UFC’s heavyweight division received a much-needed breath of life once again as the prospect Alexander Volkov pulled off the upset win over the legendary Fabricio Werdum at UFC London.
Saturday night’s action from the English capital was one of the stranger UFC events in recent memory.
For one, we were treated to two finishes that came in at 4:58 and 4:59 of the third round of each of their respective bouts and barring three decisions, there was a healthy dose of submission and knockout victories to keep us entertained.
The main-event fixture between Fabricio Werdum and Alexander Volkov was a weirdly playful bout in which the Brazilian’s theatrical side was in full effect. Jumping kicks, playing possum and some oddly courteous trash-talking managed to set an interesting tone for the fight’s opening stanzas but once Volkov was able to inflict some serious damage to Werdum’s eye, the clock started to tick and he went into desperation mode.
An ill-advised flurry of punches in the fourth round seemed to signal Fabricio’s final attempt at winning the fight before the inevitable doctor’s stoppage and sure enough, when Volkov was able to counter the result was devastating.

It’ll certainly shake things up at 265lbs and for Werdum, with his advancing age, it may force him to take a long, hard look at his standing within the sport. Either way, his career to date has been truly exceptional and to lose to an up-and-comer of Volkov’s talent is no reason for shame. With a new contender in the division, however, who knows how things will play out.
