Brazilian jiu-jitsu wizard Ryan Hall managed to hand the legendary BJ Penn the first submission loss of his career with a phenomenal imanari roll.
The imanari roll was a technique frequently used by the Ultimate Fighter winner during his time on the reality TV show and tonight, he used it perfectly to set himself up for the fight-ending heel-hook submission.
Penn, in his prime, was regarded as one of MMA’s finest BJJ practitioners and while his best days are no doubt long behind him, the ease at which Hall was able to snatch up his leg and get the tap was simply astounding.
Another big loss for the Hawaiian confirms what has been apparent for some time and for Ryan Hall, this was an invaluable win after his lengthy absence from competition had seen him fade out of the public eye to a certain extent.
With wins over Artem Lobov and Gray Maynard also in his locker, who knows how big of a step-up in competition the UFC will be willing to give him next time around but regardless, it has become clear that we’re dealing with another level of submission specialist with this guy.
