Magomed Bibulatov, one of the UFC’s hottest rising prospects, was absolutely flattened in his UFC 216 meeting with John Moraga on Saturday night.
It almost seemed too good to be true for the one-time UFC flyweight title-challenger but when John Moraga stepped into that UFC octagon to face top up-and-comer Magomed Bibulatov, many had pegged him to lose out in devastating fashion.
Bibulatov, who won his UFC debut, beating Jenel Lausa at UFC 210, was unbeaten going into this match-up and for many – including the champ himself – looked destined to one day meet Demetrious Johnson inside the octagon.
Moraga, who actually did unsuccessfully challenge the current champ Johnson for the belt, has been on a pretty noticeable decline in recent times, going 4-4 in his last eight – losing to top 125lb-rs like Sergio Pettis, Joseph Benavidez and John Dodson.
Sure, anything can happen once those octagon doors close but when Moraga was signed to take part in this match-up, few gave him little more than an outsider’s chance of upsetting the odds.
But upset them he did – and in the most spectacular of fashions – knocking the heavily-favoured Bibulatov out within the opening two minutes of the fight.
