Following his UFC 222 KO defeat at the hands of Brian Ortega, Frankie Edgar was on the receiving end of a huge outpour of respect from his fans, fellow fighters and beyond.
For all the thrills, joy and utter delight we experience when we tune in every weekend to see our favourite fighters compete, it can be easy to forget exactly what it is that we are watching. The brutal lows that are felt in the world of combat sports are often reserved for those present inside the ring, cage or octagon but with stakes higher than any other sport out there, sometimes the extent of a vicious loss has to be seen to be appreciated.
When Frankie Edgar stepped up to take on the streaking featherweight prospect Brian Ortega on short notice, he was once again commended for his ever-eager attitude towards fighting. This time, however, the risk completely backfired.
Ortega isn’t exactly known for his devastating power, but if you judge him solely on the strength of his showing last Saturday night, the shades of Francis Ngannou at UFC 218 he displayed with his finishing blow would have you second-guessing that assumption.
Edgar’s team reacted live to Ortega’s stunning first-round KO and their expressions make for a difficult watch, especially if you have followed the career of ‘The Answer’ over the years.
Mark Henry's reaction to Frankie Edgar being knocked out is heartbreaking. I can't imagine what it feels like to see one of your friends stopped like that. The love he has Frankie is unquestionable. pic.twitter.com/2luEinwxPs
