Ahead of his UFC 222 co-headliner against Brian Ortega, remind yourself of Frankie Edgar’s dominant first-round KO of Chad Mendes back in 2015.
The longtime featherweight contender and former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar faces a unique threat on Saturday night when he takes on the highly-dynamic submission wizard Brian Ortega. Although Edgar’s shot at the belt was set in stone with the original booking of him and the champ Max Holloway for UFC 222, his Hawaiian opponent was forced to withdraw due to injury.
Now, in truth, nobody would blame Frankie if he chose to sit out and wait for Holloway to heal up, I mean, it was he who first pulled out at UFC 218 when the bout was first put together. However, with just a month left until the fight was scheduled to take place, Edgar decided to bite the bullet and take a new opponent.
In taking Brian Ortega, ‘the Answer’ could well have drawn the trickiest card in the featherweight deck right now, a truly creative submission specialist whose ability to get the win is sometimes incredible to behold. We took a closer look at Ortega’s chances against the legendary in a separate piece but with the latest edition to the UFC’s ‘Free Fight” series, one of Frankie Edgar’s most impressive wins is brought to the fore.
Back in 2015, just a few months after Conor McGregor KO’d him at UFC 189, Chad Mendes was dealt a similarly tough hand as he was paired up with Edgar the night before McGregor would defeat José Aldo at UFC 194. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t appear as though his chin was ready for what Edgar brought to the table and in one of the bout’s opening exchanges, he was rocked and put away in stunning fashion.
