Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor topped off tonight’s rather lukewarm press conference with an intense staredown that showed two men who were nothing less than ready for business.
The circus is over, ladies and gentlemen.
Tonight saw the final press conference between boxing’s Floyd Mayweather and MMA’s Conor McGregor and though the anticipation from fans was reaching fever-pitch in the leadup to this one, the resulting affair was fairly underwhelming, to say the least. Both men gave a short speech and the media questions made up a small portion of the proceedings but in contrast to the wild and frenetic displays of bravado found on their world tour a few weeks back, there seemed to be little room for playing games this time around.
Fight week is a time spent deep in focus for those competing in combat sports, though, it must be said. Long weeks have been spent fine-tuning and preparing bodies and gameplans and after such a long period of time fixated on such what will amount to less than an hour of work, naturally, the time for fun and games will long have passed.
Of course, Mayweather/McGregor is an outlier in every sense of the word but from the get-go there was a real sense that both of these men were through with the glitz and glamour, something that will no doubt be apparent when they step into the ring on Saturday night. The conference itself was brief, yes, but the faceoff that followed carried a subtle undercurrent of intensity that bore all of the complexities of a relationship that has been quietly brewing for several months now, a rivalry that will be resolved on the world’s biggest stage in just a matter of days.
