The famed Tristar head-coach has given his prediction for a 165lb showdown between his fighter Georges St-Pierre and lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Speaking to YouTube channel MMABetz (via BJPenn.com), Zahabi gave his take on the possibility of a 165lb division and how an inaugural championship matchup between St-Pierre and Khabib would be the perfect way to get things started.
“As of what I understand right now, there is no 165lb division. It’s a ‘maybe’ from what I understand. It’s a rumor I should say, and if that happens I think it could be very interesting for Georges. I’m hoping that rumor is true.
“I think the best matchup would be, for sure, Khabib. If they were to create a 165lb division, I think it would make a lot of sense to have Georges St-Pierre and Khabib be the first ones to fight for that title.”
St-Pierre, of course, last fought at 185lbs but when you consider the toll it took on his body to get himself heavy enough to be competitive with and eventually defeat then-champion Michael Bisping – the fact that he has slimmed down tremendously in the time since is not surprising in the least bit.
As for his prediction for the fight, Zahabi, of course, sided with his own star-pupil to beat the undefeated Dagestani grapper.
“That would be a very competitive fight, you know? Both are flawless fighters. They’ve been flawless over the years.
“I just think that Georges’ striking is going to be a little bit sharper and his surprise takedowns will be surprising.”
