Watch: Dana Confirms That Conor McGregor Will Not Get Lightweight Title-Shot

Dana White has made it clear that Conor McGregor will not be taking on the winner of UFC 242’s lightweight title showdown between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier.

And in truth, no matter where you stand as far as the Irishman is concerned, the news that he will be forced to fight at least once more before stepping into a championship battle will be refreshing.

Now that the 155lb division is well and truly in the control of Khabib Nurmagomedov, there did seem to be some suggestion that Conor would be given another crack at recapturing his belt – despite losing out in an underwhelming performance at UFC 229.

According to Dana White, McGregor is angling for a return to the octagon later this year – or early next year.

Speaking in a recent interview with TMZ, the UFC president spoke about UFC 242’s main-event as a fight that will, of course, have some serious control over the division’s future next year.

“I think he’ll either back this year or early next year. We’ll see how this whole thing plays out in September.

Upon being asked if he would be granting the Irishman an immediate crack at the UFC lightweight title, his response was fairly straight-forward.

“No, [he won’t get the Nurmagomedov/Poirier winner], but it’ll shake a lot of things up, whoever wins that fight.”

In the same interview, White made it clear that both a move to 170lbs and a showdown against Jorge Masvidal are incredibly unlikely due to the size difference that would exist between both men.

His thoughts on a showdown between Gamebred and The Notorious can be read here.
