Chael Sonnen outlines exactly why Kevin Lee will be the next in line to face off against lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
After a period of complete and utter uncertainty in the 155lb division, UFC 223’s frankly insane fight-week culminated in the unbeaten Russian grappler Khabib Nurmagomedov hoisting the promotional lightweight onto his shoulder after serving up yet another absolute mauling, this time on short-notice replacement, ‘Ragin’ Al Iaquinta.
The now infamous media day that took place in the leadup to UFC 223, of course, will be remembered as one of the craziest times the sport has ever endured. The original contender Tony Ferguson and former-champ Conor McGregor would have certainly been the first in line for a shot at the belt now that Khabib is the one with it but with injuries and issues outside of the octagon now in play, many have wondered at who exactly will face the Russian next time around.
Madison Square Garden is the date put forward by Nurmagomedov and his team and in a recent video, the former UFC title-challenger Chael Sonnen gave his take on the identity of Khabib’s next opponent.
Speaking on his usual platform – his official YouTube channel, Sonnen made a pretty solid point when discussing the manner in which the UFC have set things out in the lightweight division.
Love him or hate him, Chael certainly has a point with this one and with the aforementioned factors keeping the likes of Ferguson and McGregor out of the picture, who knows, we could well see the ‘Motown Phenom’ sharing the octagon with ‘The Eagle’ before long.
