Kamaru Usman managed to put a beating on the former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos to make his claim to a welterweight title shot stronger than ever.
Now at a perfect 9-0 in the UFC, the former Ultimate Fighter winner managed to take home his most impressive win to date – beating the admittedly undersized RDA to earn a unanimous decision victory.
The TUF 28 finale was the event and Usman went into his headlining showdown as the considerable favourite over the Brazilian.
It’s not hard to see why ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has been seen as one of the most-avoided fighters in the UFC today and with an opponent, in dos Anjos, who he outmatched physically by a considerable distance, he was able to keep the pressure on for the vast majority of the fight’s twenty-five minute duration.
RDA gave a spirited effort, though, and while the fight was standing he certainly had his moments but it became pretty clear early on that he just didn’t have the power to hurt Usman – something that allowed Kamaru to trade frequently before initiating the grappling exchanges.
And while Colby Covington seems to be next in line for the divisional champion Tyron Woodley, UFC president Dana White told reporters in the fight’s immediate aftermath that he may well give Usman the nod on the back of such a dominant win.
“I would like to see [Usman] fight Woodley now after seeing that.
Listen, Colby Covington pulled out of the fight, didn’t defend his belt, this, that, and the whole thing. I’m one of these guys, when I just see a fight like this, I want to see Usman fight now.
“We’ll see what happens, though. I’m not saying that’s the case [that Woodley/Usman is next]. Nothing’s guaranteed in life, man. Nothing’s guaranteed in life.” (via MMAJunkie)
