UFC Russia Reportedly Has Its Headlining Matchup

Ariel Helwani reported yesterday that the UFC’s long-awaited trip to Russia finally has its headlining bout and all things considered, it’s a pretty good one.

When the UFC announced their intention to make their first trip to Russia, the fan expectation – at first – was that the reigning UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, would be an absolute certainty to headline.

Khabib is a bonafide superstar in his home-country and with talk of him facing off against the absentee former-champion Conor McGregor – imaginations ran wild as many pictured a clash between these two giants in the remote setting of Moscow, Russia.

It was a fun thought in reality, that fight – if it ever does happen, will take place on US soil.

And while UFC president Dana White has gone on to confirm that Khabib will not have a part to play in the show itself but now, according to reports made by MMAFighting‘s Ariel Helwani, two of the greatest submission threats in the UFC today will face off in the night’s main event.

Russian heavyweight Alexey Oleynik has the strangest knack for sinking in his patented Ezekiel choke, which he now holds twelve wins by. The submission, which requires you to be on the bottom as your opponent mounts, has helped him as he continues to put together a decent run of wins in recent times, defeating Junior Albini and Travis Browne but if these reports are to be believed, he will have his hands full with the former-champ Fabricio Werdum.
