Gunnar Nelson is quietly one of the UFC’s most potent finishers, something that is highlighted by his devastating, but technical, body of work to date.
Earlier this week, we delved into why this is such a huge fight for Nelson’s push towards reaching his long-expected potential.
And it’s very true.
As one of the best pure jiu-jitsu practitioners on the roster, Gunnar brings a 94.1% finishing rate to the octagon with him on Saturday night – a number that may surprise some upon hearing it.
A potent finisher who has scored the stoppage in 16 of his 17 victories – only a split decision loss to Rick Story in his first five-rounder, a decision defeat to the legendary grappler Demian Maia, and a blatant series of eye-pokes that led to him being TKO’d by Santiago Ponzinibbio have set him back so far.
Who knows how things would have played out in his career had his UFC Glasgow showdown with Ponzinibbio back in July of 2017 gone his way but now, with an opponent of Leon Edwards’ quality in front of him – the promise of an elite-level test is there for the winner.
With us now just a matter of days away from UFC London, the UFC have uploaded Gunni’s top-5 finishes, which can be viewed below.
For some reason, the UFC have chosen to omit his UFC 231 submission of Alex Oliveira but we’ve decided to include it anyway.
