UFC 236: Holloway vs. Poirier began the ESPN era of the world’s premier mixed martial arts promotion with a shockingly low pay-per-view buy-rate.
All things considered, the show will live long in the memory as a result of the pair of soon-to-be-legendary showdowns in the night’s main and co-main events.
Israel Adesanya’s five-round war with the former TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum will soon be held to the same levels that the greatest fights in the history of the sport. A truly brutal affair, one that will write each man’s name in the annals of the UFC’s memory.
After that incredibly tough show to follow, the main attraction of the night, Holloway vs. Poirier for the interim-lightweight title, was always likely to fall short but their five-round battle was also nothing less than a classic.
Unfortunately, such things don’t generally don’t meant that the PPV numbers will be impressive and according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer, the figure was below 100,000.
The ESPN deal now requires viewers to subscribe to their ESPN+ service – something that no doubt hindered the amount of people who watched it.
One would have to assume that these numbers will show a gradual increase as the numbers of subscribers grow.
