Tony Ferguson has made it clear that he will happily fight Conor McGregor in the event that his UFC 223 opponent Khabib Nurmagomedov pulls out of their contest.
It’s not often that the MMA community are in unanimous agreement on anything but this week it does seem as though we are collectively praying that the fourth time will be the charm.
Three failed attempts to set up the lightweight collision between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov have resulted in a fourth and with the lightweight title on the line, the stakes have never been higher and with that, the expectation to see these guys actually fight.
Artem Lobov will take on Alex Caceres on the night’s undercard and as a result, rumours surrounding the possibility of seeing his SBG Dublin team-mate Conor McGregor in attendance on the night have been rampant.
Ferguson spoke to MMAFighting about the fight itself and his take on Nurmagomedov as an opponent.
“Khabib is a strong challenger, I have to give him that. But in order for that, he has to have his hand held at every practice and he has to get someone to teach him how to cut weight. He’s a cake eater; he’s a silver spoon fed cake eater. I’m about to take that food from him and beat him over the head with that sh*t!”
As for the prospect of taking on a short-notice replacement in the event that Khabib is forced to pull out, there is of course only one name on the mind of El Cucuy at present.
“Absolutely, give me ‘McNuggets’. I’ll chop that b*tch in half. I don’t give a sh*t who they put in front of me. I’m a champion and I fight like a champion with or without that belt.”
It would be nothing short of an absolute disaster if this eagerly anticipated lightweight showdown falls apart for what would be the fourth time, but still, the very notion that McGregor is ready and willing to fight has us excited.
