UFC interim-lightweight title challenger Tony Ferguson spoke on ESPN recently about his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov, the ever-present speculation about Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor, as well as how he himself would defeat the Irishman if they met inside the octagon.
Tony Ferguson is a man who would perhaps hold the UFC’s lightweight championship in another time, under different circumstances. For a while now, the 155lb division has been amongst the roster’s most stacked and with the current champion Conor McGregor on a self-imposed hiatus, Ferguson will have to wait to secure himself his first world title.
The good news is that El Cucuy will face off against the unbeaten sambo practitioner Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 209 for the interim title and for many, it stands as one of the most intriguing matchups currently scheduled for 2017.
Ferguson is riding a highly-impressive nine-fight win-streak at the moment and after his latest win over the former champion Rafael dos Anjos, believes himself to be in the pole position for a shot at the undisputed title when McGregor returns.
One man who certainly disagrees with that notion is the 24-0 Russian, Khabib Nurmagomedov, whose own – perhaps more impressive run has seen him utilize his world-class grappling to best every single opponent he has faced as a mixed martial artist.
Recently, Ferguson spoke to ESPN a Los Golpes about what the fans should expect from his upcoming UFC 209 co-main event showdown with Khabib.
“For UFC 209 you can expect fireworks. I’ve been working on my hands like you would not believe, my head-movement, I don’t want to get hit anymore. It’s a flawless victory I am looking for. I’ll go out there and out-condition this guy, put the pressure on him and completely shut up all the fans out there who are haters.”
Concerning Conor McGregor – a subject Ferguson seemed more-than-happy to shed light on – he first gave his impression of how a fight between the Irishman and the unbeaten boxing star Floyd Mayweather would go down before then outlining exactly how he would defeat the man holding the undisputed lightweight title if they ever fought.
“You know what, everybody’s got a shot. It’s a fighter’s chance and anybody can get knocked out on any single day. But this isn’t four-oz gloves, this is a completely different sport. When you get hit you can’t take em down like he tried to do with Nate Diaz.”
“If Conor McGregor and myself were ever to go toe-to-toe I’d put him down, hard. I’d put him down with snap-jitsu, he would go to snapdown city and that would just be the end of Conor.”
Tony Ferguson is known for his wide array of sneaky and crafty submissions but perhaps his most commonly utilized one is his infamous d’Arce choke, a move many are looking to as a potential foil for Khabib Nurmagomedov when they meet at UFC 209.
Ferguson and Khabib will contest the UFC’s interim lightweight title at UFC 209 on March 4th.
