The injuries suffered by Thiago Santos during his UFC 239 clash with Jon Jones have been revealed to be far more serious than previously thought.
Considering how competitive the fight was during its twenty-five-minute runtime – the fact that Marreta was able to be as successful as he was at the time has been made even more shocking by this latest development.
Brazilian MMA outlet Combate were the first to report the news that Santos has tore his ACL, MCL, PCL, and meniscus in his left knee – news that later confirmed by ESPN.
Speaking to the media directly after the fight, Santos explained how he felt in there, knowing full well that his leg was slowly giving out on him.
“I left everything in there even after injuring my knee in the first round. I fought four rounds on a southpaw stance, unable to move like I usually move, unable to throw the strikes I usually throw.
“I didn’t shock the world because of those circumstances, but I did what I could do in those conditions and I’m satisfied.”
Who knows if we’ll ever get the opportunity to see Jones vs. Santos II but considering the extent of his injuries, one would have to assume that it will be quite some time before we see the 35-year-old back in action again.
