Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson has officially called it a day on his mixed martial arts career after his second-round submission loss to Daniel Cormier last weekend.
Anthony Johnson shocked the world at UFC 210 last weekend when he announced his immediate retirement from the sport of mixed martial arts. ‘Rumble’ who was known for his frankly ridiculous knockout-power, succumbed to a second-round submission locked in by the champion Daniel Cormier and for the most part, looked a shadow of himself for the bout’s duration.
Johnson, who, of course, is primarily a striker, chose to rely on his wrestling against the Olympian Cormier, something that baffled everyone from the fans to his own corner on the night. AJ’s wrestling background is a solid one but for many, his only real route to victory against the acclaimed grappler standing in front of him was to connect with one of his trademark right-hand shots.
Today, after the MMA world have had at least some time to digest Johnson’s decision, the hard-hitting Georgia-native took to his official Instagram page to thank his fans and lay the Rumble within him to rest.
Hello Monday! A new beginning starts today and I am so happy about that… My body can recover and I can focus on something different other than mma. MY life has been amazing and I haven’t come close to scratching the surface. I’ll miss mma and every aspect of the game, but my time is over and I’m ready to watch the new generation take over. Now I can be Anthony Johnson/AJ and not Anthony Rumble Johnson! Thank you all for the love and support throughout the yrs… Rumble Squad forever! #RumbleSquad The End of Rumble
