Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson Verbally Agrees To A Potential ‘Fight Of The Year’ In The Making

The two-time UFC welterweight title challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson has made moves towards getting his eagerly anticipated return to the octagon signed.

Thompson’s two unsuccessful title challenges over the course of the last six months have certainly taken the wind out of his sails to a certain extent but despite being unable to best the champ, Tyron Woodley, over the course of ten five-minute rounds, his skills on the feet are just about as good as you’ll ever see in the sport of MMA, period.

UFC 205 and UFC 209 played host to Woodley and Thompson’s pair of battles and though their first meeting was widely regarded as one of the best fights of the year in 2016, their overly cautious clash at UFC 209 won neither man anything in the way of praise from the fans, in fact many were nothing short of disgusted with the rather drab offering, especially given the quality of their first encounter.

And while Woodley’s reign at the top of the 170lb division has seen him linked to potentially huge fights with everyone from Nick Diaz to Michael Bisping, Wonderboy’s future – for the most part – has remained something of a mystery.

There were whispers of him taking on the highly touted karate and BJJ fighter Gunnar Nelson a few weeks back but when the Icelandic contender recently signed to take on Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC Glasgow in July, Thompson’s next opponent was once again shrouded in uncertainty.

Now, however, following last weekend’s UFC 211 and the statement made by the welterweight division’s top contender Demian Maia by defeating Jorge Masvidal, something resembling normality has been restored at 170lbs as the UFC’s president Dana White all-but-confirmed Maia’s eventual shot at the UFC belt.

Jorge Masvidal – on the other hand – is now opponent-less and after expressing his interest in taking on the karateka Thompson, Masvidal followed up with a response that showed both interest and confidence in his abilities to win the fight.

Masvidal, despite having his welterweight title ambitions put on hold for now, would present a very new challenge to the technically masterful Wonderboy. Jorge’s abilities in every facet of MMA are complimented perfectly by his very unique and creative style and if the UFC do, in fact, put this fight together, the welterweight division’s summer will be stacked from top-to-bottom with potentially insane fights.
