Stephen Thompson’s Idea For His Next Opponent Is Twice As Good As A Matchup With Gunnar Nelson

Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson appeared on the MMA Hour today to discuss his next move as a mixed martial artist and gave us his own pick for his next matchup.

Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson is fresh off of his UFC 209 loss to Tyron Woodley for the welterweight title, and though the eagerly anticipated matchup was a tepid encounter at best, Wonderboy will know that his stock didn’t take too much of a hit in the wake of the rather tame five-rounder.

Now, with no scheduled opponent for him on the horizon, many have been pointing to the Icelandic Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner Gunnar Nelson as a fun matchup for the American Thompson, after his recent UFC London victory over Alan Jouban but today, in an appearance on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Thompson put forth his own idea for his next walk to the octagon and if I’m being completely honest, it’s a much more appealing proposition on paper, at least.

“Me & Robbie Lawler. I think that would be an awesome fight. He’s a striker, even Carlos Condit or Nick Diaz. Just give me something, I love to stand there, I love to bang it out and with these guys you don’t have to worry about the wrestling or worry about the takedown. They may try something but they’re not notorious for it. I think it would be really exciting and really fun to prepare for.

“I mean, Robbie Lawler, he held the title and I just hope he keeps healthy cause we haven’t heard a whole lot from him since the Tyron fight. It’s been a while since Robbie Lawler fought so hey man let’s get this thing going.”

Wonderboy and Lawler, of course, both share the honour of having been beaten by the current champion Tyron Woodley in recent times and though Thompson will be itching to get a third crack at the 170lb belt, he more than likely is well aware of the fact that his back-to-back failures in winning the coveted strap will have moved him back in the queue.

This would be a fun fight and one fight fans would most certainly not complain about if it does get signed.
