SBG Ireland’s Richie Smullen suffered a tough loss in his UFC debut last night after being submitted by Luis Pena in the first-round.
Richie Smullen gave it is his all during his brief but eventful UFC debut last night but in the end, he succumbed to a submission finish at the hands of the highly-touted Luis Pena.
‘Violent Bob Ross’ at 6’3″ towered over the Irishman inside the octagon and while Richie was able to have some early success with the takedown, on the feet the reach advantage proved to be a big difference.
Smullen came into this matchup after a truly bizarre but unfortunate time on the Ultimate Fighter and with this loss, suffered his first defeat in pro-MMA.

Still though, if you ask anyone who knows and trains with this 26-year-old lightweight, they’ll tell you he is one of the most dedicated and hard-working guys around. It was an early career setback against a very talented prospect in Pena so we’re sure it won’t be long until we see Richie Smullen back in the win column.
