According to MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani, the UFC had some absolutely insane plans in place for Conor McGregor prior to his arrest on Thursday.
Khabib in the summer, interim-titles at 170lbs, Rafael dos Anjos?
According to MMAFighting, plans were in place that potentially involved all of those things prior to the arrest of Conor McGregor on Thursday – something that will no doubt further frustrate those fans who have been dying to get word on the Irishman’s future throughout this period of inactivity.
With the pullout of Tony Ferguson, the UFC were originally going to withdraw Khabib Nurmagomedov from UFC 223 and schedule him for a title-tilt with McGregor in the summer but then decided against that once Max Holloway was booked in El Cucuy’s place.
Another plan concerning McGregor was to give him an interim-title shot at welterweight against the man he was once set to face at UFC 196, the former-lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos. It all was still in the contract negotiation stage but all things considered, it would have been a very interesting year for Conor had the events of Thursday evening not transpired.
And although his UFC career is more-than-likely still intact, the odds of seeing Conor McGregor in action before summer’s end just dropped substantially and we, the fans, must sit back and wait as the sport’s biggest star sorts himself out.
