UFC 213’s highly-anticipated welterweight showdown between Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone has reportedly been scrapped due to an injury sustained by Cerrone.
We just can’t win, can we? For the second time now, the highly anticipated welterweight clash between ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler and Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone has apparently been scrapped after the former lightweight title-challenger Cerrone reportedly sustained an injury during his ongoing fight-camp.
UFC 213 is set to take place on July 8th in the t-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas and though the championship bouts that make up the main and co-main event slots have fans excited, it was the three-round welterweight matchup between the former champion Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone that looked primed to steal the show.
Now, with less than two weeks to go before the event, MMAFighting‘s Luke Thomas and Ariel Helwani are reporting that the potential ‘fight of the year’ has been scrapped after Cerrone – who is coming off of a brutal KO loss to Jorge Masvidal – picked up an undisclosed injury during his preparations.
One silver lining that has come with this potentially awful news is that sources close to Helwani and Thomas have stated that the UFC are looking to reschedule the fight for UFC 214 instead, which will at least soften the blow for fight-fans somewhat.
Not much else is known about this development right now, but we will keep you posted as this story unfolds.
