Rafael dos Anjos managed to submit his UFC Rochester opponent Kevin Lee in the fourth-round after a high-intensity battle in the night’s main-event.
From the word ‘go’, these two former lightweights put their gas-tanks to the test for your viewing pleasure.
And while both men have had success in the 155lb division in the past, the decision to forgo each of their respective weight-cuts have been ones met with a positive reaction. Each guy has had something of a rough history with making the lightweight limit and in all honesty, each would likely be better suited to a 165lb division.
For Lee, this was the first time in the UFC that he had competed as a welterweight and all in all, it was a mixed bag of success for him.
Issues of cardio seemed to be there to a certain extent but again, this fight was fought at a furious pace from the very start – with striking exchanges mixing into relentless takedown assaults.
Each man had their successes in both department but as the fight went on – despite a spirited display from The Motown Phenom, it became clear that RDA had a lot more in the tank.
In the fourth round, after some fantastic work in nullifying his opponent’s takedowns, dos Anjos found himself in mount with plenty of time to work.
Latching himself onto an arm-triangle, he managed to get the tap – sealing an absolutely crucial victory for himself and his welterweight title ambitions.
After a two-fight skid that had seen him lose out to both Colby Covington and reigning champion Kamaru Usman, fans of the Brazilian will be delighted to see that he has been able to rebound – because another loss in the 170lb top-flight may well have been devastating for his career.
In the case of Kevin Lee, it’s back to the drawing board – but make no mistake, at 26, he still has a lot of time to iron out the creases in his game.
