Today saw the announcement that the legendary Georges St-Pierre will make his return to professional competition this year as he faces off against Michael Bisping for the UFC’s middleweight title.
This will be a day that will be remembered for a long time in the history of MMA. UFC President Dana White appeared on ESPN’s SportCenter with the promise of a huge announcement and when he finally revealed what it was, the MMA community were left divided.
Georges St-Pierre has officially been confirmed to make his long-awaited return to mixed martial arts as he faces UFC champ, Michael Bisping for the middleweight crown.
St-Pierre last fought in November of 2013 at UFC 167 in a bout in which he took a brutal beating at the hands of the former-champion Johny Hendricks and despite the fact that his hand was raised on the night, GSP’s immediately announced he would be taking a break from the sport.
At 34, it’s reasonable to believe that Georges still has a lot to give at the highest level and given his near-obsessive approach to the martial arts, it’s not outside of the realms of possibility that he comes back better than ever.
The MMA community were split down the middle on the decision to grant St-Pierre an immediate title shot when the likes of Yoel Romero and Jacare Souza have been waiting patiently in the wings and below, you can find a list of some of the standout reactions from some of the MMA game’s most prominent members.

Bisping smart for taking the big payday fight but if GSP wins no way he's brave enough to fight Yoel! 😅😅 https://t.co/BMGLI4UBNS

My thoughts in a nutshell: GSP vs Bisping is a great fight I'm excited for … that should not be happening right now because of the title.

If Georges St-Pierre beats Michael Bisping I would be stunned if we see anything but GSP vs. Anderson Silva for the middleweight title.

From Romero's mgmt: "We don't have any comment right now other than Yoel wishes GSP well in his return. He'll talk more about this soon."

For all of those who are either excited or indifferent to the return of GSP, there is perhaps no one whose day will have taken a turn quite like that of the number-1 ranked Yoel Romero, who – to his credit – wished the challenger St-Pierre the best as he makes his move towards the title that Yoel should probably be fighting for in his place.
