Patricio Freire managed to steal away the lightweight title of promotional legend Michael Chandler in the opening round at Bellator 221.
There was an added level of intrigue heading into the opening round of the Bellator 221 headlining showdown between the three-time and reigning lightweight champion Michael Chandler and his opponent Patricio Pitbull.
In the past, Chandler had twice defeated the brother of Patricio, Patricky – a career lightweight.
And while the vast majority of the younger Freire brother’s career has been spent at featherweight, in his attempt to earn himself a second consecutively-held title and dual-weight champion status, he stepped up to take on the champ and many ways, avenge the pair of defeats he had handed his brother.
One minute into the first round was all it took for him to realise that.
A hard shot stumbled Chandler before the Brazilian followed him to the ground, causing the referee to call the fight there and then, much to the protests of the champ – who felt he was very much still there.
It’s an understandable shout, but have a look and see for yourself.
