Nate Diaz has playfully responded to the recent speculation linking him to a comeback against the welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 217.
The world of mixed martial arts just isn’t as fun without the Diaz brothers, is it?
For what has seemed like an age, the fans have been deprived of seeing two of the sport’s most electric personalities and competitors inside the octagon and though both men don’t exactly appear to be fully retired, their self-imposed hiatus has left the entire MMA community frustrated and above all else, hungry for each guy’s next outing.
Nick Diaz hasn’t fought since a venture into the middleweight division against Anderson Silva in 2015 and for Nate, he seems completely unwilling to budge as he pursues the massive paydays he feels he has been deserving of for his entire career.
So when the news broke that the UFC were supposedly looking at booking the younger Diaz for a welterweight title showdown with the champ, Tyron Woodley, the fans collectively lost their minds – both in anger at the idea of a fighter who lost his last contest getting a title shot, but also, at the completely bonkers but utterly riveting idea of such a matchup taking place.
Tyron himself seems completely onboard with the fight but recently, following reports that the fight was very close to being finalised, Nate Diaz posted a cryptic Instagram photo that acknowledged the gap that would be filled by him finally returning to the octagon.
The song referenced in the post is, of course, hip-hop artist Eminem’s hit single ‘Without Me’, which includes the refrain below.
“Now this looks like a job for me
So everybody, just follow me!
‘Cause we need a little controversy
‘Cause it feels so empty without me”
Now, of course, we’re reading into things a bit here but Nate – who has been known to post cryptically in the past – clearly understands the power of his situation and though one of the headlining spots at the aforementioned UFC 219 has been filled by the women’s featherweight title bout between Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino and Holly Holm, the potential for this fight to take place on one of the year’s biggest cards could well see the UFC make the move and book Diaz for what would be a truly amazing comeback.
