Bellator MMA have put together a middleweight title fight for the ages as Gegard Mousasi looks to defend his title against welterweight champ, Rory MacDonald.
It has yet to be made official by the promotion themselves, but MMAFighting reported last night that Bellator have set a date for Gegard Mousasi to make a middleweight title defence against his fellow former-UFC vet, Rory MacDonald.
September 29 is the date reported for a bout that may well be the biggest in the promotion’s history. Mousasi will bring a seven-fight win-streak with him against a fighter, in MacDonald, who has been regarded as the finest MMA athlete outside of the UFC today.
Rory couldn’t get his hands on that coveted UFC gold during his original run but after defeating the former-champ Douglas Lima earlier this year – he finally reached a level of status that many have felt he has been destined for.
Both men are undefeated under the Bellator banner, both are in their respective primes and both are champions – Rory at 170lbs and Gegard at 185lbs.
The quality of fights on offer from the UFC’s greatest rival has been steadily increasing in recent times and with their heavyweight grand-prix in full swing and this mammoth super-fight to look forward to, things are well and truly on the rise as far as the Scott Coker-run fight show are concerned.
