Conor McGregor took a rather unexpected break from putting the UFC roster on blast to wish the rising prospect Sage Northcutt a happy birthday.
Two of the most divisive figures on the UFC roster had a rather strange interaction on Friday, one that was baffling for more than one reason.
The word ‘divisive’ may apply to both Conor McGregor and Sage Northcutt for two entirely different reasons but regardless of each man’s standing within the UFC and the sport of MMA as a whole, it’s fair to say neither is without their critics.
On one hand you have McGregor, the feared knockout artist and all-round superstar whose inactivity in recent times has given rise to some pretty consistent questioning of his motivations from both his fans and detractors. On the other, you have Northcutt, whose only real crime – in the eyes of most – is him being on the receiving end of the pretty blatant (and some might argue undeserved) push that the UFC seem intent on giving him.
Apart from that, you’d be hard-pressed to find a pair of more contrasting fighters. The Dubliner’s brash and confrontational bravado is completely at odds with Sage’s innocent politeness, but in an odd and practically unprecedented event, McGregor decided to bring out the birthday wishes for the young lightweight after Northcutt posted a photo of his head photoshopped onto a ‘McGregor-esque’ looking body.

Okay, it might not exactly be breaking news, but since when does McGregor wish other UFC fighters a happy birthday? Especially other lightweights (and a Team Alpha Male product, to boot).
