Max Holloway put his status as the world’s best featherweight beyond any doubt when he comprehensively beat down Brian Ortega in a thriller at UFC 231.
It’s not often a fight can be described both as a ‘comprehensive beatdown’ and a ‘bonafide classic’ without being at risk of contradiction.
But that’s exactly what we got when Max Holloway defended his 145lb crown against the rising force that was Brian Ortega at UFC 231.
Holloway’s accuracy and volume were the story of this fight, as he started to do work on the face of T-City – whose own toughness was almost to his detriment as he absorbed an ungodly amount of punishment at the hands of the Hawaiian technician.
For all the damage that Max was able to do to Ortega, though, his remarkable ability to keep pressing saw him briefly swing the fight’s momentum wildly in his favour – with his best moment coming in the form of a perfectly-timed spinning elbow.
But despite his best efforts, the sheer relentlessness of his opponent eventually wore him down enough for the official doctor to call the fight to a close just before the final round.
With Holloway now set to make his long-awaited step up to the lightweight division to face Dustin Poirier in a rematch of their 2012 meeting for the interim-title, relive Max’s most entertaining win to date – courtesy of the official YouTube account of the UFC.
