Derrick Lewis Thinks Stipe Miocic Deserved UFC 230 Title Shot

Derrick Lewis responded to the news that he was getting a UFC heavyweight title-shot by admitting that he feels Stipe Miocic should have gotten it in his place.

‘The Black Beast’ may have stolen the show last weekend (depending on what you’re into) with his astonishing last-minute comeback KO over the hotly-tipped contender Alexander Volkov.

The fight was well and truly lost for Lewis as the clock ticked into its final thirty seconds. After nearly fifteen minutes of being picked off at a distance by his lanky Russian adversary, he managed to find that next gear at the very last – knocking his man out cold with a barrage of strikes.

The post-fight interview that followed was the stuff of legend.

Speaking on the decision to make the quick turnover and face Daniel Cormier at UFC 230, Lewis again spoke to TMZ about the current state of his cardio.

“Yeah they did, but I really don’t think I’m ready for the title shot, that’s 5-rounds and s*** and I can barely go 3-rounds.

“I used to train 30-minutes a day whenever I trained, this camp I trained for an hour so I like better get my hours up in training.”

Then, in a moment of honesty, he admitted that the former champion Stipe Miocic probably deserved to get his rematch with DC ahead of him.

“I don’t know why they don’t want to give it to Stipe. It’d been great for them to give it to Stipe than to me, but I appreciate them giving me the shot.

“I really believe that Stipe really deserves the shot, seeing as how he was the champion for a while, he defended that many times, and I guess dominant for a while.

“I don’t know why they gave it to me before they gave it to Stipe. Everyone else, whenever they lost their belt, they got a shot to win it back. I don’t know why they didn’t give it to Stipe, unless he wanted some time off.”
